• Compared to Freon, R-410A works at higher pressure. Therefore to withstand this pressure, modern A/c devices are integrated with heavy-duty compressors. This reduces the chances of cracking of the compressor. If you were to put R-410A refrigerant in an older unit tuned for R-22, the pressure would be too much and the unit would crack.

• The compressor of an air conditioner needs to be lubricated for proper operation. R-22 air conditioners use mineral oil and R-410A systems use synthetic oil. The latter is generally more soluble with R-410A than mineral oil is with R-22. This implies Puron is more efficient than Freon.

• There is a limited supply of R-22 and its price will increase as supplies diminish.

• Dry charging a unit could be cost-effective compared to replacing an air conditioner designed for R-410A. But dry-charged units typically offer much shorter warranty periods. Although R-22 is still available for recharging older systems with refrigerant leaks, its cost has shot up like anything.
